If you're coming to Ksamil, I'll be honest with you: the pictures are real, but July and August are a completely different experience from the pictures. The water really is that blue, the islands really are that close, but in peak summer the little town gets extremely busy. Ksamil is now one of Albania's biggest beach destinations, and the pressure of summer tourism is very noticeable.
So if a friend asked me how I'd actually do Ksamil, this is what I'd tell them.
What Ksamil is known for
The four islands
This is obviously the big one.
The Ksamil Islands sit just offshore, and they're small enough that you can reach them by boat. This is the view you've probably already seen 100 times on Instagram.
My favourite thing: don't just look at them from the beach. Get a small boat and actually go around them.
The water
Ksamil has some seriously clear Ionian water.
But here's my local-style warning: don't judge Ksamil from an August afternoon photo.
Come early in the morning if you want to see the beaches at their nicest and quietest.
If you can choose your dates, June or late September is much more my style than the middle of August.
Butrint
This is the big reason I wouldn't treat Ksamil as only a beach destination.
Butrint National Park is just a short drive away and gives you ancient ruins, nature and history all in one place.
If you come all the way to Ksamil and never visit Butrint, honestly, you're missing half of the area.
Mussels & seafood
The nearby Butrint Lagoon is famous for mussels, and seafood is obviously a huge part of eating around Ksamil.
If you're staying here for a few days, I'd definitely have at least one proper fish or seafood dinner.
Summer evenings
Ksamil changes completely once people come back from the beach.
Restaurants fill up, music starts, people walk around with ice creams and drinks, and the whole place becomes much more lively.
It's a beach town first and a nightlife destination second.
5 things I’d actually do
1. Take a boat around the Ksamil Islands
This is the one I'd put at the top.
Don't just rent a sunbed and stare at the islands all day.
Take a boat, swim around the islands and find somewhere to stop.
2. Visit Butrint
If my friends are staying in Ksamil, I'm taking them to Butrint.
It's close enough that there's really no excuse not to go.
I'd go earlier in the day, especially in summer, then come back to Ksamil for the beach.
3. Go to the Mussel House
This is one of my favourite recommendations for someone who wants to see a different side of the area.
Instead of another meal overlooking a packed beach, you're around the Butrint Lagoon, where the famous local mussels come from.
Order the mussels.
That's the whole point.
4. Have a proper beach day
Pick a beach, get there early, swim, have lunch and don't over-plan it.
Ksamil is one of those places where sometimes the best thing to do is absolutely nothing.
But again — if you're visiting in July or August, don't expect an empty beach.
5. Take a trip to the Blue Eye
If you have a car or don't mind taking a tour, I'd make the trip to Syri i Kaltër — the Blue Eye.
It's inland, so it gives you a completely different landscape from Ksamil.

10 restaurants I’d actually recommend
Ksamil has a ridiculous number of restaurants now, so I’m not going to pretend they’re all the same.
1. Museum Ksamil
My pick when I want proper Albanian food.
If you're tired of seafood and pizza, come here.
I'd order traditional dishes rather than something generic.
The restaurant is specifically known for traditional Albanian food and currently has very strong reviews.
2. WG Restaurant
One of my seafood choices.
I'd come here when I want fish and a proper dinner rather than just grabbing something between beach sessions.
Fresh seafood and Mediterranean and Albanian dishes are the reason I'd choose it.
3. Poda Restaurant
For the view.
If you're going to pay for a seaside dinner in Ksamil, I want the view to actually be worth it.
I'd ask for a table facing the water and order seafood.
Don't waste the view by sitting with your back to the sea. 😂
4. Sole Mare
My choice when I want a nicer dinner.
The seafood is the obvious choice, but their pasta is also worth considering.
I'd save this one for dinner rather than lunch and book ahead during August.
5. Ostro Beach Bar & Restaurant
Sunset dinner.
This is the one I'd consider when the view is part of the plan.
If I'm taking someone out for a nice evening, I'd try to get a waterfront table.
And yes — book it. Sunset tables disappear quickly in high season.
6. Rrapa’s Grill
When I want meat instead of seafood.
Ksamil can make it feel like you have to eat fish every day. You don't.
I'd come here for grilled meat and something filling after spending the day swimming.
It currently has some of the strongest review numbers among Ksamil's grill restaurants.
7. The Mussel House
This one is different from most of Ksamil.
It's around the Butrint Lagoon, so you're away from the busiest beach strip.
If you like mussels, I wouldn't skip this.
The whole experience is more about the lagoon and the local product than being in the middle of Ksamil's tourist centre.
8. Basilico Restaurant
When someone in the group doesn't want seafood.
Italian, Mediterranean, seafood and meat options make it an easy group choice.
I'd go here when everyone wants something slightly different.
9. L’arte Della Pizza
Pizza night.
Because after three days of seafood, sometimes you just want pizza.
It's currently one of the better-reviewed pizza options in Ksamil.
10. Savory Bistro Café & Lounge
Breakfast, cocktails or a more modern evening.
This is the one I'd choose when I don't necessarily want a traditional taverna.
Recent reviews particularly highlight the breakfast, seafood, cocktails and friendly service.
5 hotels I’d recommend
1. Hotel Meta
My choice for location + overall stay.
It's right around the main action, but you're still getting the kind of smaller hotel experience I prefer over a huge resort.
The current guest score is around 9.4, with particularly strong comments about the family running it, location and breakfast.

It's close to the beach and has rooms with balconies and some with sea views.
I'd put a couple here if they want something comfortable and a little more polished.

It's only a short walk from the beaches, and the location is one of its strongest points.
I'd recommend it if you want to be able to wake up and get to the water without needing a car.

If you don't want a huge resort and prefer something modern and more intimate, I'd look here.
It's currently one of the highest-rated value boutique-style options on Tripadvisor's Ksamil hotel listings.

5 coffee places I’d actually try
1. Sweet Corner
My pick for coffee + something sweet.
Don't just get an espresso and leave.
Get a pastry, baklava, cheesecake or ice cream and sit down for a while.
It's currently one of the highest-ranked cafés in Ksamil.
2. Savory Bistro Café & Lounge
My morning choice.
If I'm starting the day slowly, I'd come here for breakfast and coffee.
It also stays open late, so you can come back for cocktails later.
3. Bianco
Coffee by day, drinks later.
This is more of a social option rather than somewhere I'd go purely because I'm obsessed with the coffee.
The nice part is that it turns into a late-night spot too.
4. Korali
For coffee with the beach right there.
If I've already got a beach day planned, I don't want to drive somewhere just for coffee.
I'd sit down here, have a coffee and stay by the water.
5. Guvat
For the view.
I'd come here more for the combination of coffee or a drink + location than because it's some secret local coffee shop.
You're looking at the islands, so honestly, that's enough reason.
Ksamil at night
Here's the honest version:
Ksamil has nightlife, but I wouldn't come here specifically for clubbing.
It's much more of a beach bars + cocktails + restaurants + late-night walking destination.
You can start with dinner, grab drinks around the main strip and then see where the night goes.
Bianco
This is one of the places I'd know if I wanted the night to continue later. It operates into the early morning during the season and functions as both a restaurant and club.
Savory
I'd start here if I wanted cocktails rather than jumping straight into a club. Recent reviews specifically highlight its cocktails and evening atmosphere.
Beach bars
This is really the Ksamil style.
Don't expect Tirana's Blloku or Dhërmi's bigger electronic scene.
Ksamil's night is more: dinner → cocktails → music → beach → late walk.
If serious nightlife is your priority, I'd actually stay in Sarandë and visit Ksamil for the beach during the day.
Things I’d tell my friends before Ksamil
- Go early to the beach. Seriously. The difference between Ksamil at 8:30 am and Ksamil at 2 pm in August is ridiculous.
- Don’t believe every empty-beach photo online. Those postcard conditions are real, but timing matters enormously.
- Book dinner. Especially in July and August. Current restaurant guides specifically recommend booking several days ahead for popular sunset tables.
- Walk inland for food. The restaurants directly on the water charge for the location. Some of the better value can be found a couple of streets away.
- Don’t spend every day on the same beach. Take a boat. Visit Butrint. Go to the Mussel House. See the Blue Eye.
- Don’t expect Ksamil to be cheap just because you’re in Albania. It’s one of the country’s biggest tourist destinations, and prices in the busiest areas reflect that.
- If you hate crowds, don’t come in peak August. I’d personally choose June or late September.

- Day 1
Early beach → islands by boat → seafood dinner → sunset drinks.
- Day 2
Butrint in the morning → Mussel House lunch → back to Ksamil → beach → dinner.
- Day 3
Explore another beach → slow afternoon → Blue Eye if you have the energy → final sunset dinner.
