The Albanian Riviera
Not one perfect beach. The whole coast.
If you came to Albania because you saw photos of impossibly blue water, you probably came for the Albanian Riviera.
And yes.
The water really can look like that.
But the Riviera isn't one destination.
It's a long stretch of coast where mountains, old villages, beaches, beach clubs, seafood restaurants and tiny bays all sit within the same road trip.
The part I love most is that you can spend the morning in a centuries-old village and be swimming in the Ionian Sea an hour later.
Where does the Albanian Riviera start?
When people talk about the Albanian Riviera, they're generally talking about the Ionian coast south of the Llogara area, stretching through destinations such as Palasë, Dhërmi, Himarë, Qeparo and Borsh toward Sarandë.
The SH8 coastal road is the famous road through much of this area.
And honestly? Drive it.
That's how I'd explore the Riviera.
My favourite Riviera stops
Dhërmi
If I wanted the full summer experience, I'd go to Dhërmi.
Beautiful water. Beach clubs. Restaurants. Young crowd. Summer parties.
But there's another side.
Go up to Dhërmi Old Village.
Walk around the stone streets. See the churches. Look back toward the sea.
Suddenly you're somewhere completely different.
That's what makes Dhërmi special to me.
Dhërmi Old Village, above the beach clubs. Himarë
Himarë is probably where I'd stay if I wanted balance.
It's lively enough that you don't feel isolated.
But it isn't as intense as some of the busiest summer areas.
You've got beaches. Restaurants. Bars. Boat trips. And plenty of places to simply sit by the water.
I'd look at:
- Livadhi
- Potami
- Himarë Beach
And I'd spend at least one evening walking around town.
Borsh
Borsh is one of the places I'd recommend to someone who says: "I want a beach, but I don't want Ksamil."
It's much more spread out.
The beach is long. The surroundings are greener. And the area feels less compressed than some of the famous Riviera destinations.
Borsh sits between Himarë and Sarandë and is one of the longer beach stretches along this section of coast.
I'd come here for a slower beach day.
Qeparo
This is one of my favourite stops for people who want something a little more peaceful.
And specifically: Qeparo Old Village.
Don't just stop at the beach.
Drive or walk up into the old village.
Stone houses. Narrow paths. Views over the Ionian.
This is the Albania I want people to see beyond the beach clubs.
Gjipe
Gjipe is one of those places where getting there is part of the experience.
It's surrounded by cliffs and feels much more isolated than the main resort beaches.
If you're willing to walk and plan a little, I'd absolutely consider it.
Bring water.
And don't arrive at midday expecting an empty beach in August.
Palasë
Palasë is where the Riviera starts feeling more luxurious and modern.
Big beach. Beach clubs. Hotels. Restaurants. And that dramatic mountain backdrop.

Llogara — don’t just drive through
This is one of my biggest Riviera tips.
Stop at Llogara.
The mountains rise dramatically above the coast and the views are incredible.
You can now use the Llogara Tunnel to save time, but if I'm doing a road trip and the weather is good, I'd rather take the scenic route.
The tunnel is practical.
The old road is the experience.
What I’d eat on the Riviera
This is easy.
Seafood.
I'd order:
- Fresh grilled fish
- Grilled octopus
- Calamari
- Mussels
- Shrimp
- Seafood pasta
- Greek-influenced salads
- Local cheese
- Fresh bread
And here's something I always tell people: ask what's fresh today.
Don't automatically order what looks best on the menu.
If the waiter says "Today's fish is really good", listen.
My favourite Riviera evening
This is my ideal:
- Beach
- Shower
- Seafood dinner
- Walk around town
- Cocktails
- Beach bar
- Decide whether I’m actually going home
That's summer in the Riviera.
Where should I go for nightlife?
- Dhërmi / Palasë
My choice for serious summer nightlife. Beach clubs, DJs and events.
- Himarë
More relaxed. Bars, cocktails and a social atmosphere without needing a huge club night.
- Sarandë
Best all-round nightlife city. More restaurants, bars and clubs.
- Ksamil
Good for beach bars and summer evenings, but I wouldn’t choose Ksamil specifically because I want nightlife.
When I’d visit the Albanian Riviera
- June
My favourite balance. Warm. Beach weather. Less crazy than August.
- July
Fantastic, but busy.
- August
Peak Albania. Hot. Busy. Expensive. Parking can become annoying. If you hate crowds, I’d think twice.
- September
Another favourite. The sea is still warm, the weather is usually great and the atmosphere becomes more relaxed.
How I’d road trip the Riviera
I'd do:
Vlorë Llogara Palasë Dhërmi Gjipe Himarë Qeparo Borsh Sarandë Ksamil
And I'd give myself at least 4–5 days.
Could you do it faster? Yes.
Would I? No.
I'd rather see fewer places properly than spend every morning packing my suitcase.
